Now that these helpful benefits have become known, tanning bed use is increasing among older adults and even men. A research survey done in 1996 found that college-age women accounted for almost all use of tanning beds. In 2004, the study was repeated. This time, it was discovered that approximately 30% of tanning bed users are now men. Men that use tanning beds tend to use them more often, so the average amount spent at a salon by a male customer is usually higher than the amount spent by female customers.

Older adults are using tanning beds more often too. About 70% of tanning bed users are now older than 25. In some places, men over 40 years old are using tanning beds. Some senior citizens even use tanning beds.

As more and more people learn about the health benefits of using tanning beds, it is expected that more older people will take advantage of this technology. Many of the health benefits provided by Vitamin D are especially helpful to the elderly. Stronger bones help reduce the risk of osteoporosis and serious injuries during falls. The newest tanning salon customers are often focused much more on the healthful benefits than on showing off that beautiful tan.
